Comprehensive Evaluation for Safe Independent Driving
Return to Driving
An Occupational Therapy driving assessment is designed to ensure safe and independent driving for individuals who may experience physical, cognitive, or sensory challenges. These driving assessments assist in determining the impact of any medical conditions or disabilities on fitness to drive and to make recommendations for vehicle purchase and modifications.
This assessment includes both off-road and on-road components, each tailored to evaluate your unique driving abilities and needs.
We partner with Driver-Trained Occupational Therapists to provide:
Off and on-road testing to determine your readiness to drive
Assessment and trialling of potential vehicle modifications and driving controls
Lessons with a driving school in a car with any recommended modifications
Reports for you GP, the NDIS and any other funding bodies
What to Expect During an OT Driving Assessment
Off-Road Assessment
In this initial stage, a driver-trained Occupational Therapist will:
Discuss your driving and medical history.
Test your knowledge of road rules.
Assess your physical, visual, sensory, and cognitive abilities.
This phase helps identify:
Any functional limitations that may impact driving.
Your understanding of safe driving practices.
Whether vehicle modifications or licence conditions are needed.
Specific requirements for the on-road component, including the type of vehicle (e.g., automatic or manual) and any modifications required.
The off-road assessment allows the Occupational Therapist to recommend supports like modifications, aids, or training to enhance your driving abilities.
On-Road Assessment
The second part of the assessment involves driving a dual-controlled vehicle under the supervision of a driver-trained Occupational Therapist and a qualified driving instructor. This session lasts approximately an hour and will assesse:
Your ability to manage physical limitations while driving.
Your judgment and responsiveness to changing traffic conditions.
Safe adherence to road laws and effective navigation through traffic.
How well you handle distractions, such as engaging in conversation while driving.
